– Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Moussaka Topping:

How to Make Moussaka

Once you have gathered all of your ingredients, it’s time to start preparing your moussaka. To begin, pre-heat your oven to 375 F.

Make the Béchamel Sauce:

1. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
2. Add the flour and whisk to form a paste.
3. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly, until the sauce begins to thicken.
4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool.
5. Beat the 4 eggs and slowly pour them into the cooled béchamel sauce, whisking to combine.
6. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

Prepare the Moussaka Filling:

1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef or lamb over medium heat until browned.
2. Add the onions and garlic and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until the onions start to soften.
3. Stir in the mashed roasted eggplant, chopped tomatoes, cinnamon, oregano, and salt and pepper.
4. Continue to cook for another 5 minutes, until all of the flavors have melded together.
5. Remove the skillet from the heat and set aside.

Assemble the Moussaka:

1. In a large baking dish, layer half of the moussaka filling.
2. Pour the béchamel sauce over the filling and spread it out evenly with a spoon.
3. Top with the remaining filling and sprinkle the grated cheese on top.
4. Bake the moussaka in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
5. Remove from the oven and let the moussaka cool for a few minutes before serving.
